Grief and Bereavement Support
Grief has no timetable, and there is no right way to grieve. Our grief counsellors offer one-on-one bereavement counselling, in person and via telehealth, for people at any point after a loss, whether that was last week or several years ago.
Grief is not limited to death. We also support people through relationship loss, health-related loss, miscarriage, estrangement, and the loss of an identity or a future you had planned for.
When Grief Counselling May Help
- You feel stuck or numb, even months after the loss
- Grief is interfering with work, sleep or daily functioning
- You are avoiding reminders, conversations or places connected to the loss
- Guilt or unresolved feelings keep resurfacing
- Your sleep or appetite has changed and has not settled
- You feel isolated, or that others expect you to have "moved on"
- Grief resurfaces sharply around anniversaries or reminders
Loss, Bereavement and Adjustment
Loss takes many forms: the death of a loved one, anticipatory grief while caring for someone with a terminal illness, pregnancy and infant loss, separation and divorce, loss of health or ability, or the loss of a career or identity.
For some people, grief becomes prolonged or complicated, sitting heavier and longer than expected. If that sounds like you, additional support is available and there is nothing wrong with needing more time or more help.
Where a loss was sudden, violent or unexpected, grief and trauma can overlap. Our trauma and PTSD counselling page explains how we support that combination specifically.
One-on-One Counselling
Sessions are individual, tailored to you and your loss. There is no group requirement and no fixed program to complete. You lead the sessions: they can hold silence, and nothing has to be talked about before you are ready.
Sessions typically run 50 minutes, with continuity of the same counsellor over time. In-person appointments are available in Moorabbin and Chelsea Heights, and telehealth is available across Australia for grief counselling in Melbourne, wherever you are.
What to Expect in a Session
Your first session is a gentle conversation about your loss and what support might look like for you. There are no form-heavy interrogations, and no pressure to cry or perform grief in any particular way. Everything you share is confidential.
Medicare rebates are available with a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP, and private health rebates may apply depending on your fund. See our Fees and Rebates page for current amounts.
No referral is needed to begin. A GP referral and Mental Health Treatment Plan are only required if you want to claim a Medicare rebate.
